The Dawson County boys' soccer team is ranked No. 1 this week in the latest Class AAA rankings.

The Tigers opened the season with wins over Winder-Barrow, 4-0, on Tuesday, and a 6-2 victory over North Forsyth Feb. 13

Four different players scored against the Bulldoggs last Tuesday night. The Tigers jumped out to a comfortable 3-0 lead at halftime on the feet of Jonathan Steele, Sal Mendoza and Dennis Pyetsukh. Pyetsuky is a freshman.

Getting first half assists were two by Brandon Lund and one by Nathan Blythe.

David Velasquez scored the Tigers final goal in the second half with 22:26 remaining from an assist by Pyetsukh.

Ty Anglin picked up his first career shutout in goal.

"Winder was a good team and gave us a great match," Head Coach Jed Lacey said. "We came out early and put pressure on Winder. I am happy with the win and excited to see what this season holds for us."

On Friday the Tigers took a 2-0 lead at intermission on goals from Mendoza and Velasquez. Mendoza's goal was assisted by Alan Sanchez. The Velasquez goal was on a free kick.

The Tigers turned up the offense in the second half, scoring goals by Mendoza and three by Brandon Lund.

It was Lund's first hat trick this season.

"It was a good win tonight," Lacey said. "We played a little sloppy and went for the home run to much. We made some adjustments at half and dominated the second half with Lund showing his skill and taking some shots for himself and putting three goals in the back of the net."

"This was a total team effort," Lacey said.

Dawson County was scheduled to travel to Gainesville yesterday for a match with the Red Elephants. Gainesville is currently ranked No. 4 in the Class AAAAA poll.

Friday, the Tigers will travel to Jefferson for a game with the Dragons. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
