Derrick Gilbert, 46, of Athens, formerly of Cumming, died May 2, 2014.

He was a member of Coal Mountain Baptist Church and had a distinguished career with the Georgia Department of Corrections for 24 years.

His father, Bobby Gene Gilbert Sr., preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Linda Gilbert of Athens; mother and stepfather, Nancy and Cloys Milford of Cumming; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby Gene Gilbert Jr. and Tracy, Jamie Joseph Gilbert and Brenna, all of Cumming; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Ellen Harris of Athens; nieces, Morgan Gilbert and Gracie Gilbert; nephews, Robert and Heather Harris, Stephen Harris; great-niece, Anna Harris; various other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. May 6 at Coal Mountain Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Bennett officiating. Interment followed at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations were requested made to either the American Heart Association, or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, or the animal rescue organization of your choice.

Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory of Cumming was in charge of the arrangements.
