Darrell Stewart, 82, of Dawsonville, died Jan. 9, 2014.

Born Dec. 18, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. Stewart had been a resident of Dawsonville for the past 44 years, having moved from DeKalb County.

Darrell retired from the steel industry after more than 55 years of service and was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, where he served on the U.S.S. Nereus, U.S.S. Randall, U.S.S. Pittsburgh and he received the Navy Occupation Service Medal.

An avid golfer, he also enjoyed time with his family and sporting events of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

His wife, Iris "Dinky" Stewart; father, Earl Stewart; mother, Nellie Copeland; grandfather, Albert "Gramps" Loberg; and brothers, Richard Stever and Ronald Copeland, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his children, Patty Stewart Morton of Cleveland, Vickie and Steve Turk, Michael "Bones" and Debbie Stewart, all of Cumming; brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman "Bud" and Marie Stewart of Lenexa, Kan., Fred and Gayle Stewart of Waterloo, Iowa, Earl and Bev Stewart of Webster City, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Janice Stever of Flowery Branch, Debbie Copeland of Phoenix City, Ala., Lola Pugh of Dawsonville; grandchildren, Trent Gilleland, Tiffany Fields, Andy and Jenny Ledford, Chris and Candice Ledford, Beth and Matthew Brown, Nathan Stewart; great-grandchildren, Trevor Lingerfelt, riley Barrett, Jaclyn Lingerfelt, Brooklyn Ledford, Drew Ledford, Grant Sarbon; various other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at Liberty Baptist Church with the Revs. Dennis Bottoms, Ruel Martin and Stephen Davis officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Bearden Funeral Home of Dawsonville was in charge of the arrangements.
