Teen’s death after Applebee’s fight may spur new charges by DCSO
police emergency

A Lumpkin County man critically injured in a fight over the weekend has died and a Dawsonville man accused in the attack may face upgraded charges, authorities say.

Daniel Lee Roberts, 20, who has already been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery for allegedly attacking Kaleb Duckworth, 19, of Dahlonega on July 25, may face new charges in connection with the teen’s death, Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said on Wednesday.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the family of Kaleb,” Johnson said in an email to the Dawson County News. “Our investigators continue to work closely with the District Attorney’s Office in regards to potential additional charges. We expect to have more information available in the coming days.”

Deputies were called to the Applebee’s restaurant on Ga. 400 in Dawson County at about 9:53 p.m. July 25, after receiving reports that a man, later identified as Duckworth, had been knocked out during a fight outside of the restaurant.

Duckworth was taken from the scene to a local hospital with severe brain trauma, where he died on Tuesday night.

Johnson said investigators are still trying to determine how the incident on Sunday night occurred.

Roberts is being held in the Dawson County Detention Center without bond.
