Murder charges filed in fatal Applebee’s fight
Daniel Lee Roberts

A 20-year-old Dawson County man is now charged with murder after a fight at a Dawson County Applebee’s that fatally injured a Lumpkin County man

Dawson County Sheriff’s Office investigators charged Daniel Lee Roberts with two counts of felony murder on Friday, for allegedly causing the death of Kaleb Duckworth, 19, of Dahlonega on Tuesday, July 27.

Roberts, who already faces charges of aggravated assault and aggravated battery, has been accused of attacking Duckworth outside of the Applebee’s restaurant on Ga. 400 in Dawson County on Sunday night.

Warrants allege that Roberts struck Duckworth in the face, causing fatal injuries to Duckworth’s brain when the man fell and hit his head on the ground.

Deputies were called to the restaurant at about 9:53 p.m. on July 25, after receiving reports that someone had been knocked out during a fight. Duckworth was taken from the scene to a local hospital with severe brain trauma, where he died on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the Dawson County News on Friday, Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said detectives are still investigating, but have determined that Roberts and Duckworth knew each other prior to the incident and that the fight may have involved an argument on social media.

They are still investigating whether any other suspects were involved in the fight, Johnson said.

Roberts is being held in the Dawson County Detention Center without bond.
