Throughout the trial of Austin Stryker, accused of killing 20-year-old Hannah Bender of Dahlonega, Dawson County News reporter Julia Fechter has been posting live details of the happenings within the courtroom. 

Below is a timeline of the postings. This article will be updated as more posts come from DCN. 

Thursday, Nov. 4

11:42 a.m. - TRIGGER WARNING: BLOOD AND GUNS. Similar to yesterday's questions about blood splatter, Kyle Denslow, Austin Stryker’s second defense attorney, asked today's forensic pathologist about bullet trajectory to help prove the theory of an accidental shooting w/ Hannah Bender holding the gun.

10:30 a.m. - TRIGGER WARNING: BLOOD. Hannah Bender’s cause of death was listed as a single gunshot wound to the head and at least 32 stab wounds. Death could’ve been caused by the gunshot, stabbing or some combination. Manner of death is homicide.

10:15 a.m. - TRIGGER WARNING: BLOOD. The forensic pathologist at the Austin Stryker trial was “unable to say with confidence” if Hannah Bender was alive or deceased when some or all of the stab wounds were inflicted.

10:03 a.m. - TRIGGER WARNING: BLOOD. During the Stryker trial, the GBI forensic pathologist said it was “extremely unlikely” that the bullet that entered the left top of the victim’s head and traveled forward toward the right eye was accidental.

9:17 a.m. - The trial for Austin Todd Stryker began this morning with the state calling its medical examiner to testify about Hannah Bender's autopsy. Stryker is accused in Bender's 2019 killing.

Wednesday, Nov. 3

2:14 p.m. - When the trial for Austin Todd Stryker resumed Wed. afternoon, a crime scene specialist with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation testified about blood splatter from the truck where Huff, Stryker and Bender were at the time of her killing.

11:58 a.m. - During the Stryker trial, Dylan Reid admitted to lying at his plea proceeding about hearing Stryker say he shot Bender and clarified that both Hannah Bender and Bailey Williams were suspected "snitches."

10:59 a.m. - Dylan Reid told the prosecution that he, Huff and Stryker put Hannah Bender in Huff’s fire pit on Sept. 15, 2019, despite thinking she still might be alive. Reid also said he denied Stryker’s later requests to separate Bender’s remains or give Stryker a ride to West Virginia.

10:18 a.m. - A noticeably nervous Dylan Reid said during the trial that he didn’t know Stryker was going to kill Hannah Bender, but he assumed that based on statements Stryker made at Huff’s house earlier that night.

9:55 a.m. - The Austin Todd Stryker trial's second day has just begun. Immediately, the state called Dylan Reid to the stand.

Tuesday, Nov. 2

5:02 p.m. - When the defense asked if he saw the gun at all after it fired on Sept. 15, Isaac Huff said “no,” explaining that he was focused on regaining control of the black Mazda pickup truck he was driving.

Huff was the first witness to speak during the trial of Austin Stryker, who has been charged with the 2019 killing of Hannah Bender.

4:04 p.m. - Contrary to what defense attorney Brock Johnson asserted in his opening, Isaac Huff answered "no" to the prosecution's questions about if he saw a gun in Hannah Bender's possession before her shooting and if Austin Stryker explained the event as accidental in nature.

3:15 p.m. - Isaac Huff has now taken the stand to answer questions from Senior Assistant District Attorney Shiv Sachdeva during the Stryker trial.

2:24 p.m. - Defense attorney Brock Johnson is now giving the opening statement for his client, Austin Todd Stryker, who's accused in the 2019 killing of Hannah Bender.

1:55 p.m. - Opening statements have begun for the trial of Austin Stryker, who is accused of murdering Hannah Bender in 2019. Senior ADA Conley Greer is speaking now.

11:07 a.m. - Jury selection for the Austin Todd Stryker trial is nearing its end, and the trial is expected to begin this afternoon.

Monday, Nov. 1 

3:26 p.m. - Attorneys will continue to screen potential jurors for the Austin Todd Stryker trial at least through tomorrow, Nov. 2.

1:20 p.m. - Jury selection began earlier today in the trial of Austin Todd Stryker, who has been charged for the 2019 murder of Hannah Bender. Selection proceedings are still ongoing.
