With the contract for new county manager Cindy Campbell finalized, the focus turns to finding her replacement in the finance department.

The Dawson County commission appointed Campbell manager on Dec. 20. She currently serves as the county's chief financial officer, a position she has held for four years.

Jan. 14 will be her first day as manager, the county's highest non-elected position. The job pays $87,000 annually, according to County Commission Chair Mike Berg.

Berg said choosing her replacement will be one of Campbell's first orders of business.

"But she can't do that until Jan. 14," he said.

The county began advertising the position to internal candidates on Dec. 20, with the application period continuing until Friday.

Campbell is replacing Kevin Tanner, who is leaving the post he has held since 2008 for the Georgia House of Representatives, where he will represent District 9.

Berg said he believes the move to county manager from the financial role will be seamless for Campbell, who served as the county's interim manager earlier this year when Tanner took a leave of absence to run for state office.

"She has a great team on her side and will be able to work with Kevin over the next two weeks before he leaves for Atlanta," Berg said.
