Commission approves mobile unit for shelter

A vote by the Dawson County Board of Commissioners last week allows a modular building that will be used as a surgical center to be placed next to the local animal shelter.

The board approved the shelter’s request during last Thursday’s meeting.

According to Carolyn Bowen, president of the Dawson County Humane Society, a supporter has made arrangements to donate the modular building.

Recent events, including a New Year’s Eve celebration and a concert by Collective Soul’s Ed Roland, raised funds to stock the surgical center, which will enable the group to provide spay and neuter services to the shelter’s animals.

Bowen said the facility will be used “strictly for the surgery or the health care of animals.”

The surgical center is expected to be in place and operational in the next few months.
