A legislative summit next week will give the community an opportunity to discuss educational issues facing the state.
Hosted by State Rep. Kevin Tanner of Dawsonville and State Sen. Steve Gooch of Dahlonega, the listening session will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at the University of North Georgia's Health and Services auditorium in Dahlonega.
Tanner said he's had several discussions within the legislative district concerning educational funding, the idea of common core and the role the federal government plays in education on the local level, as well as the general direction and future of education.
"I expect we'll hear from several people in the public on these and other educational issues affecting our state," he said.
Tuesday's session is the only one to be held in north Georgia. There will also be sessions for school superintendents and educators to have in depth discussions prior to the 6:30 p.m. meeting.
"I am proud of the opportunity to have this here in the district," Tanner said. "I don't think there is any issue that's more important in the state than the future of education, and I'm excited to be involved and be a small part of this process."
While the Senate and House Education committees are the primary driver of these meetings, representatives from the governor's office and office of the state superintendent are expected to be in attendance.
