Student excels in reading program

Erin Osborne has accomplished something that, according to Riverview Elementary officials, no other student from Dawson County has.

The Riverview Elementary fourth-grader has earned more than 1,000 points in the Accelerated Reader Program.

"Students read books and take comprehension tests in this computer-based program," said Riverview Media Specialist Ann Lott. "For example, picture books are worth .5 points and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is worth 14 points."

Books are weighted by the difficulty and length.

Students receive a Riverview Elementary ball cap for earning 100 points, a field trip for 200 points and a lunch with a friend for 300 points.

For Osborne and her 1,000 points, according to Lott, if calculated correctly, she has read more than 7 million words this year, independent from her school work.

"If you find the right book for yourself, you will be mesmerized by the words and engulfed into another world," Osborn said about the reading challenge.
