A young markswoman from Dawsonville has her sights set on winning an upcoming national rifle competition.

Mattie Brogdon, a junior at Texas Christian University, will compete March 11-12 at the NCAA Women’s Rifle Championships held at Columbus State University.

The championships will be held at the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center on campus and the U.S. Army Marksmanship unit at Fort Benning.

Brogdon is among 48 competitors selected for the championships. According to a news release from the NCAA, 40 competitors were selected from team rosters submitted by the top eight teams selected.

The remaining eight competitors were selected based on scores submitted from previous events.

Brogdon got a nearly perfect score at a NCAA competition in October 2010, when she and teammates with Texas Christian University bested the No. 1 ranked school.

During the match, she scored a 592 — with 600 being a perfect score. It was an all-time high score for Brogdon.

Because of her high score and her contribution to the team’s victory in October, she was also named athlete of the week on Oct. 26 at Texas Christian University.
