Special Olympics

The mission of the Dawson County Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Dawson County. They are given continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friend- ship with their peers, families, other Special Olympic athletes, and the community. Special Olympics is the first organization to offer training and competition for these athletes. The organization is accredited through Special Olympics Georgia.

The goal for 2015 is to increase the roster of athletes; the base of volunteers; the opportunities offered to our athletes; involvement by the community, and donations. In order to reach their goals, the group needs the continued efforts of current athletes and volunteers.

In order to participate in competitions, the group must have funds for uniforms, equipment, registration fees, training, transportation and food. The games the athletes are currently training for are the state indoor winter games held in Marietta, Jan. 23 -25. The group is training three bowling teams and one basketball team.

For the bowling team, items needed are: T-shirts ($50), food for the weekend ($150), gas money ($100) for the three vehicles transporting the teams. Lightweight bowling balls are also needed. The basketball team needs: Uniforms ($200), food for the weekend ($300), gas money ($100), for the two vehicles transporting the team.

Dawson County Special Olympics welcomes any monetary or in-kind donations. You may choose to sponsor a team or make a general donation. All do- nations are tax deductible and in-kind donations will receive a Value-In-Kind Contribution receipt from the State Office (SOGA), if requested.
