A longtime Dawson County resident died Saturday from injuries sustained from a motor vehicle accident.

Edna Gazaway, 81, died at the scene in the March 16 wreck. She was driving a 2009 Chevrolet HHR.

Georgia State Patrol records note that Gazaway was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Traveling eastbound on War Hill Park Road, Gazaway traveled off the roadways edge on the right side. Clipping a mailbox, the vehicle traveled across a private driveway and struck the raised roadway of Clark Road. The impact vaulted the car up, causing it to strike a stop sign and then hit trees and limbs. The vehicle then rotated and flipped over. Finally, the car hit a chain-link fence, coming to a rest on the right side of the vehicle.

No other cars were involved. The GSP and Coroner Ted Bearden said a medical problem is not suspected to have caused the accident. GSP reports that no drugs or alcohol are suspected in the accident, but speed of the vehicle was a factor.

GSP spokesperson Robin Stone said the patrol has worked seven fatalities in Lumpkin, Dawson and Forsyth counties since March 1. Were just asking folks to slow down, and make sure they wear their seatbelts, Stone said. Watch your surroundings, and watch other drivers.
