A Dawson County man faces arson charges after allegedly setting his vehicle on fire.

Damon Blake Ellis, 23, was arrested for two counts of false-statement writings and concealment of fact, as well as first-degree arson.

He is accused of pouring an ignitable substance onto the engine of his 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer, causing it to catch fire, Dawson County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Tony Wooten said.

According to warrants, Ellis told investigators at the scene that mechanical problems caused his SUV to catch fire on July 20 on Bailey Waters Road.

Wooten said Ellis later recanted his statement, allegedly admitting to causing the fire himself.

Ellis was arrested on July 22. His bond was set at $37,200. He has since been released from the Dawson County Detention Center.

The incident is still under investigation.
