Dawson County's Chief Tax Appraiser has resigned his position after being arrested Tuesday at his office on misdemeanor drug charges.

MIchael Joseph Roberts, 36, turned in his resignation on Wednesday, according to Joe Bosworth, vice chair of the Dawson County Board of Tax Assessors.

"As far as I'm concerned, this matter is resolved," said Bosworth.

Roberts was charged with possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and possession of a drug related object.

A citizen tip that an odor of marijuana coming from a car parked in the government center parking lot led to the arrest, according to Dawson County Sheriff's Major Tony Wooten.

"Lt. Col. John Cagle with an officer and a K9 unit investigated the complaint and identified whose car it was," said Wooten. "The K9 alerted that there was an illegal substance in the car and the vehicle was searched."

Roberts was taken into custody and later released on $2,200 bond, according to an arrest report.

He had served as chief tax appraiser since April 2011 and worked for the county more than 11 years, first as a field technician, then was later promoted to deputy appraiser in 2006.

Kurt Tangel, 38, Dawson County's deputy chief appraiser, will serve as the interim chief until the tax board appoints or hires Roberts' replacement., according to Bosworth. The board is scheduled to meet in a special called session on Wednesday, May 15.

Tangel was hired by the county as a field appraiser in 2006 and promoted to deputy in 2011 when Roberts was promoted to chief.

Two weeks earlier, Tangel had given his two weeks notice and planned to leave his post, according to County Manager, Cindy Campbell.

"I oversee HR (human resources) and he (Tangel) had given his two week's notice, but he has officially withdrawn it," she added.

Tangel's farewell reception scheduled for Thursday, May 9, was cancelled.
