An incident authorities initially described only as a dispute has left two people dead at a home on Maple Hill Drive in downtown Dawsonville.

“We had a disturbance call in about 1 p.m. and just a short time ago we determined we had two deceased persons in the residence,” said Johnny Holtzclaw, a spokesman for the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office.

A short time later, officials confirmed that the deaths appear to be a murder-suicide, and officials are now saying the two people, identified as a man and a woman, were likely in a relationship. Officials say it appears that they both lived at the home where the bodies were located.

While the scene is an active investigation, Holtzclaw said that there was no further cause for alarm from nearby residents and businesses.

“This situation is over and contained and our investigative teams are working the scene,” he said.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol assisted with the case.

"The scene was not safe when we arrived. We believed it was a pretty heated situation," said Holtzclaw, who added that law enforcement officers set up a perimeter, but didn't take "offensive action."

Neighbors were told to stay inside their homes while officers secured the scene.
