The termination process is underway for a Dawson County Detention Center shift supervisor accused of punching an inmate in June.
Sgt. Shane Jenkins was served on Monday with a notice of adverse disciplinary action in accordance to agency policy, according to Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle.
The notice stated Carlisle's intent to terminate Jenkins' employment with the sheriff's office, where he has worked since March 2008.
"[He] was allowed to appeal the decision to me and I upheld the termination. He will be terminated from our agency," Carlisle said on Tuesday.
Jenkins had been on paid administrative leave since June 23, about two weeks after the incident reportedly occurred.
According to Carlisle, what appeared to have begun as a verbal altercation June 9 escalated and ended with the inmate being treated for a black eye and lacerations to the face.
The jail's command staff turned the matter over to Carlisle to review when he got back from vacation.
"I read everything they gave me and looked at the pictures and I determined that I didn't need to do an internal [investigation] myself, because I felt it was borderline criminal," he said in June. "So I contacted GBI and asked them if they could send an agent up to look at this case."
Carlisle said GBI conducted an investigation and turned the findings over to the district attorney, who will determine if criminal charges are warranted.
District Attorney Lee Darragh on Monday confirmed the GBI's investigation is complete and has been turned over to him.
He said he could not discuss the case or the potential for criminal charges until he reviews the findings.
As of Tuesday afternoon, calls to the GBI seeking comment had not been returned.
Jenkins' termination comes on the heels of two other local jailers being dismissed.
Jonathan Biles was fired May 9 after an internal affairs investigation determined he had violated the agency's employee code of conduct and workplace harassment policies.
Biles had been employed as a jailer since January 2013.
In April, Robert Bo Tanner of Murrayville was dismissed after his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
