A Dawson County employee involved in a June 15 fatal wreck near Veterans Memorial Park could face charges in connection with the incident, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

A maintenance truck driven by Jim Ferrante, 41, was pulling a trailer when it turned in front of a motorcycle on Hwy. 9 at Recreation Road, said a spokeswoman from the state patrol’s Cumming post.

The driver of the motorcycle, 23-year-old William Buchanan “Buck” Chapman, was later pronounced dead at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Authorities said Chapman, a local youth leader at Christ Fellowship Church, was traveling toward Dawsonville when the collision occurred about 8:40 a.m.

The Recreation Road crossing is at the entrance to Veterans Memorial Park.

The state patrol’s collision reconstruction team was at the crash site June 15, though it could be several weeks before its findings are documented, the spokeswoman said.

Ferrante, a facilities maintenance supervisor, has been employed with the county since 2004, county officials said.

He was expected to return to work after taking a couple days off, though officials said it was unlikely he would face any disciplinary action.

Funeral services for Chapman, a Forsyth County native, were Saturday at Christ Fellowship Church.

According to his obituary, his wife Cindy is expecting the couple’s first child.

The wreck is the county’s third traffic death of 2010.

In April, a 64-year-old Dahlonega woman died in a two-vehicle, head-on wreck at Hwy. 53 and Thompson Road.

Also that month, a 71-year-old Dawsonville man died in a collision with a tractor trailer on Hwy. 53 East, between War Hill Park and Dawson Forest roads.
