Representatives from the Council for Quality Growth will discuss a controversial water conservation plan at the Dawson County Homebuilder’s Association’s Oct. 21 meeting.

Rory Cunningham, president of the homebuilder’s association, said the Etowah Water Habitat Conservation Plan will “render land in Dawson County undevelopable and will also cause land values to fall significantly.”

The plan calls for strict measures to limit stormwater runoff from building and redevelopment projects. The runoff, fish and wildlife officials say, threatens endangered species, including three in Dawson County.

The proposal would affect about 85 percent of the county.

“This meeting is going to affect all land owners, farmers, etc., regarding their property rights,” Cunningham said. “We want to get the word out there that this is something that needs to be taken very seriously. Many people need to attend this meeting, as it will affect them in one way or another.”

Officials with Dawson County and the city of Dawsonville have said they oppose the plan. 

The meeting will be held at 8 a.m. Oct. 21 at Ryan’s in Dawsonville.
