So you say you have the best chili in Dawson County?

Well, then the Dawson Community News challenges you to a showdown.

The inaugural Downtown Showdown Chili Contest and Bake Off will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Dawsonville Municipal Complex.

"There's no question that Dawson County has some of the best cooks around, so now's the time to show us what you've got," said Stephanie Woody, general manager of the Dawson Community News, which is organizing the event.

In addition to Dawsonville's best chili recipe, the contest also calls out to bakers in the community to showcase their sweetest treats and most tasty desserts.

"We all have a sweet tooth, and what better way to satisfy it than to sample dozens of homemade cakes, pies or cookies, and then to be able to vote on the best---that's just a cherry on top," Woody said.

Winners, who will be determined by a People's Choice vote and local celebrity judges, will be announced at 3:45 p.m.

The winners will also be prominently featured in the Sept. 26 edition of the Dawson Community News.

Entry fee is $15 per category. Chili makers and bakers must prepare all entries off-site and are encouraged to have their tasting stations set up by 10:45 a.m. for tastings to begin at 11 a.m.

Tickets to taste are $5 per person and include the opportunity to taste five entries and enter one vote. Additional tastings will be available for purchase.

The family event will also feature activities for the kids, live music by the rock band Exit 13 and a car show at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

Local civic groups are also invited to set up activity stations, such as face painting, balloons and snow cones to give away to children attending the Downtown Showdown with their families.

"We see this as a great community event that is sure to be a whole lot of fun," Woody said. "We look forward to seeing you all on Sept. 19."
