The local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America recently awarded a scholarship to a Dawson County High School senior.

Callie Elizabeth Pruett, 18, received $500 from the group during the school’s annual honor’s ceremony.

With plans to study psychology, Pruett will attend North Georgia College & State University this fall.

“I am the third generation in my family to attend North Georgia College, and I am proud to keep the tradition going,” she said in her scholarship application letter.

Chapter president Wayne Watkins said Pruett was the ideal candidate for the scholarship, which is based primarily on community involvement.

“She is just a prime example of what you’d like to look at as youth today, which is refreshing to us older guys to see someone that’s so dedicated and community involved,” he said.

Pruett volunteers throughout the community and is involved in numerous school related activities and organizations.

Now in its fourth year, the scholarship is open to descendants of Vietnam veterans.

Pruett’s grandfather Henry Patton Johnson served during the conflict and is very dear to her, she said.

“My grandfather is by far the most intelligent and the wisest man I know,” Pruett said.
