UNG grad hired as reporter with Dawson County News
Erica Schmidt

The Dawson County News this week hired a lifelong Forsyth County resident and recent University of North Georgia graduate, Erica Schmidt, as a reporter covering education, life and general news topics.

On Friday, DCN Editor Alexander Popp said that Schmidt is a welcome addition to the newspaper’s staff, and will provide a fresh, enthusiastic perspective on local topics and issues affecting Dawson County residents on a daily basis.

“We are excited to see the stories and coverage that Erica is going to bring to the table at DCN,” Popp said. “It’s safe to say that her enthusiasm, curiosity and passion for storytelling will be a worthy addition to the newspaper’s long history of quality, compelling journalism.”

Prior to her hire by DCN, Schmidt worked for the UNG student newspaper, The Vanguard, where she covered a variety of different topics concerning the school and the North Georgia area.

Schmidt, a 22-year-old Forsyth County native, said that outside of reporting she spends her time baking and decorating cakes, singing, playing piano and leading worship at her church, and cross stitching or crafting.

“I'm very excited to join the staff at Dawson County News, and I'm looking forward to getting to know and serve the people of Dawson County as a local reporter,” Schmidt said.
