Volunteers with Keep Dawson County Beautiful are asking the community to go green this holiday season by recycling their real Christmas trees.

The annual Bring One for the Chipper program has collected and recycled more than 5.9 million Christmas trees statewide since 1991.

"Dried-out trees are a fire danger and should not be left in the home, garage or placed outside against the home," said Kristi Hudson, director or Keep Dawson County Beautiful. "Please donate your trees to be recycled."

The trees will be chipped into mulch, which will be available free to county residents on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The mulch also will be used for projects throughout the county, including playgrounds, public beautification efforts and wildlife habitats.

Undecorated trees can be dropped off at the county's transfer station and recycling center, 946 Burt Creek Road, from 7 a.m-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Jan. 4.

The transfer station and recycling center is the lone local tree drop-off site this season.
