A 15-year-old girl remained in critical condition Tuesday, authorities said, two days after she was struck by a boat near Nix Bridge Park on Lake Lanier.

The teen, whose name has not been released, was flown Sunday afternoon to Grady Memorial Hospital.

Battalion Chief Milton Keller with Dawson County Emergency Services said the teen was treated for severe lacerations to the head at the park before being flown to Grady’s trauma unit.

“It took the flight crew about 11 minutes to get to the scene and land from Gainesville,” Keller said. “They were very complimentary of the treatment the Dawson County crew had given to the girl before they arrived.”

The incident happened about 4 p.m. Sunday as the teen, who authorities said is from metro Atlanta, celebrated Father’s Day with family on the lake.

She and two others were being pulled behind a boat on an inner tube when she fell off and was hit by a passing pontoon boat.

Georgia Department of Natural Resources Sgt. Mike Burgamy said he did not expect charges to be filed in the case.

“The pontoon boat took evasive action and swerved to miss the first girl that fell off,” Burgamy said. “He just didn’t see the second girl.”

DNR impounded the pontoon boat as part of the investigation.

“We see this as a very unfortunate accident,” said Burgamy, who added there was no alcohol involved in the collision.

Brian Richardson, who has lived in the Nix Bridge area for about 20 years, said Sunday’s incident was the first he has seen in the cove, which he described as “a small and pretty congested area of the Chestatee River.”

“There is kind of a blind curve or corner,” he said.
