With the beginning of the school year just around the corner, Family Connection has planned its annual “Stuff the Bus” event to help Dawson County students prepare for school.

Family Connection is collecting school supplies to help stuff the bus that will be at Kroger on July 28. Last year, about 500 book bags filled with supplies were given to local students according to Family Connection Coordinator Nancy Stites.

The goal of the fundraiser is to fill the bus with as many school supplies as possible.

“This assistance gives many family budgets a much needed break from back to school costs and ensures every child is prepared and ready to learn,” said Stites.

Family Connection is currently accepting donations at its office at 96 Academy Ave.

Associated Credit Union has offered assistance this year as well by setting up a collection bin in the lobby. Dollar Tree is also accepting donations.

Items to donate include: Earbuds, three ring binders (1 ½ inch or 2 inches), three prong pocket folders, one gigabyte flashdrives, dry erase markers, erasers (cap and bar), five subject dividers, pencils (regular No. 2 and colored), supply/pencil boxes (solid colors), washable markers, notebook paper (wide and college ruled), scissors (blunt and regular), glue (sticks and bottles), protractors, composition books (wireless), highlighters, index cards, handheld pencil sharpeners, generic book bags (solid color) and drawstring sports bags.

Monetary donations are also being accepted. Checks can be made payable to Dawson County Family Connection and mailed to P.O. Box 872, Dawsonville, GA 30534.

The annual Stuff the Bus event is set for 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. July 28 at Kroger in Dawsonville.
