Incumbent Republican Steve Gooch has won his re-election campaign for Georgia’s District 51 State Senate senate, defeating Democratic challenger June Krise.

Based on 100% of polls reporting in District 51, which includes Fannin, Gilmer, Lumpkin, White, Dawson and part of Pickens Counties, Gooch received approximately 83% of the ballots cast (84,613 votes).

Who he is: Gooch is a North Georgia business owner. He currently owns and manages an environmental services company in Dahlonega.

How he reacted: “Serving as the State Senator for North Georgia has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. I am grateful and humbled to have earned the opportunity to serve you another 2 years,” Gooch said in an email to the Dawson County News. “Thank you to everyone who voted for me.  For those who did not, I will work harder to earn your support.”

What’s next: “The next two years will be important in many ways. First, the general assembly will be holding a special session as required by the constitution every 10 years for Reapportionment. It will be a priority of mine to keep our communities whole and not divided for political reasons,” he said. “Many other issues will surface between now and January that I am certain will require careful consideration but I will work hard to defend the conservative values of North Georgia when making a decision on each of those.”
