Elvis Presley's classic "You Ain't Nothin' but a Hound Dog," blared through the speakers during last week's sock hop at the Dawson County Senior Center.

In true style, ladies wore poodle skirts, classic pop hits were played and the dance floor was lively.

"We danced with the two steps, four steps, a little jitter bug. That was our dancing [over] the years," said Armand Mori, a regular at the senior center.

Seniors showed off their moves, performing to both the faster hits as well as the slow songs.

"There's a song that says melodies bring back memories ... They can hear a song like the ‘Twist' and it takes them back to a date where they met their husband or wife," said event coordinator Michelle Crane.

The sock hop was a big hit, according to officials, with more than 35 attendees.

"They're still talking about how good it was," said director Margie Weaver the day after the event.

The sock hop was part in a series of events designed to provide seniors with an opportunity to have fun over the summer.

Day trips to neighboring attractions are usually available, but the extreme summer weather has pushed the center to wait until later months.

"We're planning a bunch of short trips so they're not out in the sun. We usually go fishing in July and August, but this year we're having to change a bit. It's been unreal hot," Weaver said.

The center provides Dawson County seniors with opportunities to travel through the region, participate in planned events and find community in the area.

"We want people to know this is not a convalescent home. This is a place where we have fun," Weaver said.
