Rotary Island at Rock Creek Park will be open for the Labor Day weekend.

"We're just excited about bringing it to the community," said Brooke Anderson, incoming president of the Rotary Club of Dawson County.

The three dimensional interactive waterpark, which features five above ground water features and six ground level sprinklers, opens to the public at 6 p.m. Aug. 28 following a ribbon-cutting celebration.

"Our goal here is to have this thing open and ready by Labor Day weekend, so that the community, the kids, the grandkids, the grandparents, the parents and everybody can all come out Labor Day weekend and enjoy this place and really enjoy a brand new feature that Dawson County currently doesn't have," he said.

Rotarian Ken Grosch has spent the last several months managing the project.

"We poured the concrete [last] Monday without a hitch, and now we're just trying to fine tune everything. We tested and all the features work fine," he said. "We have a hard week of getting the
patio poured, getting the landscaping down and putting a new finish on the pavilion floor. If we can pack two weeks' worth of work into [this] week, we'll be right on schedule."

The club earlier this year committed to building Rotary Island at the park.

Dawson County Commission Chairman Mike Berg, who is also a member of the club, visited the park Friday and was impressed with what he saw.

"This is another great project by a group of citizens for the betterment of all the kids and adults in this county and around the county. It's great. It's just super. It's something new for us," he said. "I know the kids will enjoy it, especially being next to the pavilion and all the other kid activities. It takes us up a step from where we've been.

"It's wonderful. Kudos to Rotary."

Admission to Rotary Island is free.
