Relay for Life Dawson County is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 20 at Dawson County High School, where hundreds of residents will join together in the fight against cancer.

The event, which raises money for cancer research, raised more than $50,000 in 2010 for the American Cancer Society. Organizers hope to exceed the amount this year.

A survivor dinner was held earlier this month to honor local men and women who continue to win battles with the disease.

On Jan. 27, Relay for Life Dawson County participants gathered for the annual fundraising kickoff at the high school.

Organizers talked about the previous year’s numbers, discussed plans for 2011 and honored cancer survivors and Relay participants.

Said event chairman Jay Walker: “It doesn’t take a lot to become a corporate sponsor.”

Suzanne Hendricks, Relay for Life community manager, said the American Cancer Society “continues to make great progress against cancer thanks in part to the fundraising power” of its relays.
