Relay for Life this Friday

The annual Dawson County Relay for Life will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawsonville.

According to the Relay for Life website, there are currently 26 teams, made up of approximately 150 volunteers, participating in the Dawson County event.

The teams have raised more than $44,696.86 so far out of a $65,000 goal to support cancer research, patient programs and education efforts and services.

Teams have activities planned for all ages including face painting, crazy hair and a bouncy house.

Food and beverages will be offered for purchase, including hot dogs and hamburgers, Kani House, BBQ, chili, cotton candy, boiled peanuts, snow cones, corn dogs, French fries and homemade baked goods.

According to Kris Rowan, chairwoman for Dawson County Relay for Life, activities begin at 5 p.m. with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. The survivors and caregivers lap will begin at 7 p.m. and the luminaria lighting and memorial lap will be held at 9 p.m. Closing ceremonies and awards will be conducted at 9:30 p.m.

At 7:40 p.m., attendees will have a chance to participate in a “Pie in the face” fundraiser, where local elected officials including State Rep. Kevin Tanner, Sheriff Jeff Johnson, Tax Commissioner Nicole Stewart, Clerk of Courts Justin Power, school board members Karen Armstrong and Roger Slaton and city councilman Jason Power will brave a pie in the face to raise money for a cure for cancer.

All funds raised will benefit the American Cancer Society.

 

Kart racing fundraiser set for May 5

Relay for Life and Atlanta Motorsports Park have teamed up for a benefit go-kart race May 5.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office and the Dawson County Emergency Services will be going head to head in the Guns and Hoses Kart Race at 10 a.m. in the ultimate competition between Dawson County’s finest.

Following at 11 a.m. is the Spicy Hot Pursuit where the public has a chance to chase the cops. Entry for the heat is $20. Proceeds go towards Relay for Life of Dawson County.

Atlanta Motorsports Park is located at 20 Duck Thurmond Road.
