Movie filming here could affect traffic

Motorists traveling through downtown Dawsonville next week should expect brief delays west of town as filmmakers shoot scenes for a major motion picture.

This month, Warner Brothers will film scenes for a movie starring Clint Eastwood at Amicalola Lodge on Hwy. 53 West.

Filming is expected to begin on or about March 20 at the motel for "Trouble with the Curve."

The production company has obtained necessary permits to allow for traffic to be stopped occasionally for brief periods during filming, according to the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.

The production company has hired off-duty deputies to assist with traffic, which will only be stopped for periods of about 10 minutes at a time. Motorists are asked to avoid the area and use Howser Mill Road as an alternate if possible.

Filming should last about seven days.

Marty Williams, vice president of travel and tourism with the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, said word of the movie filming locally has impacted the number of phone calls he's received since last month's announcement.

As Dawson County's Camera Ready liaison, Williams is credited for placing Dawsonville in the spotlight for producers looking to film movies in the area.

"I'm getting phone calls about every day, people wanting to be extras, be in the movie, meet Clint Eastwood, you name it," he said. "It's exciting."

But even more exciting for Williams is the potential the movie could bring to Dawsonville and Dawson County.

"When you look at this like when ‘Deliverance' was filmed in Rabun County. No one was offering white water rafting on the river, but afterwards it became a business boon for the town," Williams said.

His hope is that Dawson County and Dawsonville reap similar rewards.

"We won't know how much potential this will bring for us until later, but I think we'll see the benefits," Williams said.
