A service Monday at Veterans Memorial Park will honor local military men and women who served their country honorably.

The county's Memorial Day tribute begins at 1 p.m.

It will include a flag raising ceremony by members of the Dawson County High School JROTC Color Guard, a 21-gun salute by the Veterans Alliance and a Laying of the Wreaths by American Legion Post 247 and Military Officers Association of America.

New Hope Church Pastor Mike Owens, chaplain for the Dawson County Sheriff's Office and Dawson County Emergency Services, will serve as the event's keynote speaker.

The community is invited to attend the service.

Community groups will also display 163 memorial markers with American flags along the streets of Dawsonville to honor deceased military men and women of Dawson County who have served honorably in one of the branches of service.

This Memorial Day, three new memorial markers will be placed around the old court house: Charles E. Sexton, Alfred A. Ardeneaux and Malcum R.T. Bruce.

The markers will be put up by members of Etowah Masonic Lodge No. 222, Free & Accepted Masons, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter No. 970, Dawsonville Lions Club, Young Business Men of Dawson County and Chestatee Masonic Lodge No. 102, Free & Accepted Masons.
