A 73-year-old Guyton man was killed Tuesday afternoon when he attempted to cross Hwy. 53 on a 4-wheeler and was hit by an oncoming pick-up truck near Perimeter Road in Dawsonville.

Hoyle Jett was taken to an area hospital where he died from injuries sustained in the collision, according to Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden.

Dawson County Sheriff's Maj. Tony Wooten said the crash occurred shortly after noon.

Jett was following the rider of a second 4-wheeler that had safely crossed the busy highway when he was hit, Wooten said.

A spokeswoman with Georgia State Patrol's Cumming Post said Jett was hit when he failed to yield the right of way to the truck. The roadway was shut down for a period while troopers investigated the collision.

Wooten said the driver of the truck, Timothy Jerome Byess of Canton, was not injured.

"He made an attempt to swerve to keep form hitting the 4-wheeler," he said.

Byess was cited for no insurance, according to GSP.

The wreck marked the county's third traffic fatality of 2013 and the fourth death on Dawson County roads.
