NORTH FORSYTH -- A crash involving a deer claimed the life of a North Forsyth High School student Tuesday night on Hwy. 369.

Trenton Basden, 18, was driving a 2001 Honda Civic east on the highway, also known as Browns Bridge Road, about 8:40 p.m. on when a deer that had just been hit by another vehicle flew into the windshield, according to Epifianio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office.

The impact sent the deer through the windshield, striking Basden. He was reportedly killed upon impact.

Basden was set to graduate from North on June 1.

The driver of the 2008 Toyota Scion that first struck the deer was not injured, Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said no charges are pending at this time and that the crash remains under investigation.

"Our Raider Nation is mourning the tragic loss of senior Trenton Basden," North Principal Jeff Cheney said. "He was an excellent student and friend to many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time."

Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman for Forsyth County Schools, said counselors will be on hand to talk to students, some of whom held a prayer before school Wednesday morning. Basden carried a heavy AP course load and worked at the Chick-fil-A in Dawsonville.

Caracciolo said that Basden was driving home from an AP macroeconomics study session.
