Kiwanis Club hosts annual run

The Kiwanis Club of Dawson County has put local runners on notice: The revenuers are coming for you.

The club will host its 11th annual Revenuer's Run featuring a 5K and 10K on Aug. 13. The event will begin and end at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame.

"We thought it would be fun this year to host an event that tells the story of some things Dawson County is known for-racing and moonshine," said Mike Underwood, Kiwanis Club president. "We hope the community will join us for what is sure to be a fun event."

The event underwent a name change this year from Cinco De Run-O to the Revenuer's Run to better reflect the community. "Revenuers" is the term used to describe U.S. Treasury Department agents who were charged with enforcing laws against bootlegging and illegal distilling.

Dawsonville's claim to be the birthplace of stock car racing largely rests with its ancestry in moonshine and the racing skillset acquired while outrunning local authorities.

For those who prefer to race without a car, the Kiwanis Club event will raise funds to support the club's mission which is to strengthen the community and serve children.

Last year the group raised $4,600 through the run, according to club treasurer Regina Varnado.

"It's all about the children," Varnado said. "All of the money we take in, we get it back out for children."

The club partners with UNICEF in The Eliminate Project to promote the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus, a disease that is responsible for the loss of nearly 60,000 women and babies each year.

The local Kiwanis Club also partners with a number of other organizations to help in and around the community like the American Red Cross, Boy Scouts, Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, Dawson County Adult Education Center, Family Connection and Kare for Kids among others.

Both races will begin at 8 a.m. with packet pick up starting at 7 a.m. For runners who need to pick up information earlier, it will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Fajita Grill.

The overall men's and women's winners will receive awards as well as age group winners and overall masters men and women.
