Hwy. 53 near Ga. 400 has reopened following Monday morning's gas main break east of Lumpkin Campground Road in Dawson County.

The road that runs between Krystal and Kangaroo gas station, 400 Center Lane, remained closed for several hours as crews repaired the break, according to Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Tony Wooten.

Several businesses in the area were evacuated as a safety precaution and traffic was diverted at Lumpkin Campground Road.

Construction crews working on the new continuous flow intersection going in at Ga. 400 and Hwy. 53 reportedly cut the line just before 10 a.m.

"The first thing they wanted to do was to get the leak contained and get the road back open," Wooten said.
