A wreck and resulting hazardous spill on Hwy. 53 East near the Etowah River closed the road for several hours in both directions Friday evening, according to Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford.

Swafford said that emergency crews responded to the scene of a motor vehicle crash involving a hazardous materials spill. There were two vehicles involved with no injuries reported.

The spilled material was a 300 gallon tote of arsenic-based insecticide with a slow leak, Swafford said.
