Board mulls redrawing boundary for precinct

Hundreds of voters could be affected by a proposal to align local voting precincts with the district lines for the state House of Representatives.

The Dawson County Board of Elections and Registration is in talks to redraw the county's western precinct boundary to match up with a redrawn District 7.

Glenda Ferguson, who chairs the board, said the proposal would shift about 690 western voters into the central precinct.

Most of the people affected would be happy if the change were to occur, according to Ferguson.

"We had several people in the western precinct that told us when they voted last year that they wanted to be in the central precinct, because it's closer to their homes," she said.

The state's legislative districts were redrawn late last year to reflect population increases indicated in the 2010 census.

The new state lines bring the southernmost part of District 7, near the Emma community, into District 9.

Ferguson said approving the proposal would mean all of District 7 would vote in the county's western precinct.

"It would be easier on the voters because if we don't make the change, poll workers would be asking voters which district they live in and many people just don't know the answer," she said.

A meeting to discuss the matter is set for 9:30 a.m. April 9 at 96 Academy Ave. Any objections must be filed with the board prior to the meeting.
