Authorities are investigating a fatal wreck Tuesday morning that involved a motorcycle and a Dawson County maintenance truck pulling a trailer on Hwy. 9 at Veterans Memorial Park.

The driver of the motorcycle, William B. Chapman, 23, of Dawsonville, was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries, according to Cathy Brooks, spokeswoman for Dawson County government.

A county facilities maintenance supervisor was driving the truck that collided with Chapman’s motorcycle, county officials said. Jim Ferrante, 41, has been employed by Dawson County for about six years.

Dawson County Manager Kevin Tanner said Ferrante was very distraught over the incident.

Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation of the wreck, which occurred about 8:40 a.m. Tuesday at Hwy. 9 and Recreation Road, by the entrance to Veterans Memorial Park.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Chapman’s family and loved ones,” said Brooks.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed in the case.

The wreck is the county’s third traffic death of 2010.

In April, a 64-year-old Dahlonega woman died in a two-vehicle, head-on wreck at Hwy. 53 and Thompson Road.

Also that month, a 71-year-old Dawsonville man died in a collision with a tractor trailer on Hwy. 53 East, between War Hill Park and Dawson Forest roads.
