A 78-year-old Blairsville woman died Sunday morning after a single-vehicle wreck on Highway 53 in western Dawson County.

According to Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Robin Stone, Mary Jane Lipp was driving east about 10 a.m. when she left the highway near Amicalola Church Road, struck a culvert and vaulted into the air.

"The vehicle then struck a wooden fence and came to rest off the roadway," Stone said.

Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford said Lipp was "rapidly extricated" from her vehicle and flown to Atlanta Medical Center.

She died in route to the hospital, according to Stone.

She added that Lipp, who was traveling alone, was wearing a seatbelt. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash.

The fatality was the second on Dawson County roads in 2014.

Miles Albert Carney, 21, of Dahlonega died Jan. 27 after the vehicle he was driving struck a patch of ice on Shoal Creek Road.
