A Dahlonega woman was killed Saturday night when she crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle near the intersection of Hwy. 53 and Thompson Road in Dawson County.

Sheryl Sheridan, 64, was pronounced dead by medical responders about 9 p.m. Saturday, according to Billy Thurmond, director of Dawson County Emergency Services.

Authorities said Sheridan was driving west on Hwy. 53 when her Chevrolet HHR crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a Ford Explorer.

The Explorer’s driver, a 30-year-old man from Gainesville, was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with minor injuries.

“Due to the impact we transported him for evaluation,” Thurmond said.

A spokeswoman with the Georgia State Patrol’s Cumming post said investigators are awaiting a report from the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of the wreck.

“We’re waiting for alcohol and drug results, or to see if there was a medical condition,” the spokeswoman said.

Just moments before the crash, a witness called Dawson County 911 dispatch to report a driver on Hwy. 53 swerving, according to state patrol reports.

Saturday’s fatality is the first on Dawson County roads in 2010.

There were six traffic fatalities in the county in 2009, and 10 in 2008.
