Locally grown fruits, vegetables and flowers will roll in by the truckload when the Dawson County Extension Office's annual farmer's market opens July 3.

The farmer's market at 298 Academy Avenue in downtown Dawsonville is open Wednesdays and Saturdays through summer and into the fall.

"They start setting up about 7:30 a.m. and stay until it gets too hot or they run out of food to sell," said Clark MacAllister, county extension agent.

Last year tomatoes, squash, beans, plums, cucumbers, blueberries, eggplant, onions and herbs were among the produce offered.

"We had several people come out on Wednesday to have their scales certified. We had a representative from the department of agriculture that checked out and certified the scales to make sure everybody is getting a fair deal," MacAllister said.

Only residents of Dawson County can sell at the market.

"We're trying to keep it very simple. Fresh produce, some cut flowers, but we don't allow jams, jellies or baked goods. You get into different permits with those," he said.
