A Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputy returned to work this week, days after he was hit by a ricochet bullet during a training exercise in Dawson County.

Sgt. Brent Weeks, 33, was taken last week to North Fulton Hospital, where the bullet fragment was removed, said Sheriff’s Capt. Frank Huggins.

“His condition was never life threatening,” Huggins said. “He was held overnight for observation.”

The incident occurred about 4 p.m. Nov. 17 as Weeks and about a dozen members of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s SWAT team were training at River Bend Gun Club in western Dawson County.

Huggins said Weeks was firing a .223-caliber rifle at a target about 45 feet away.

“One of his rounds hit the steel pole cross bar that holds paper targets,” Huggins said. “A fragment of the bullet struck him in the neck at a depth between an half inch and a inch.”

Emergency personnel were able to stop the bleeding at the scene and stabilize Weeks before an ambulance took him to the hospital.

Huggins said Weeks, who never lost consciousness, is “fully recovered and back to work.”

Weeks has been employed by the sheriff’s office since August 2002. A supervisor with the agency’s uniform patrol division, he is assigned to the south precinct.
