The application deadline for the fourth annual Joe Dumphy Memorial Golf Scholarship is less than a month away. The last day applicants can submit their application is March 17.

Joe Dumphy was a freshman at North Forsyth High School when he died in July 2015 after sustaining injuries in a car wreck as he left Chestatee Golf Club in Dawsonville. A memorial scholarship was established in his honor by his family to financially assist junior golfers as they chase the college dream that Dumphy was not able to pursue.

The memorial fund provided more than $15,000 in local scholarships between 2016 and 2017. Last year, in what would have been Dumphy’s senior year of high school, the memorial fund far surpassed its record by providing $17,000 to local athletes.

At minimum, the scholarship board will award a $5,000 college scholarship to one local college bound high school senior in Dawson or Forsyth County and additional scholarships to other deserving high school seniors in any county in Georgia.

Eligible candidates are male or female high school seniors residing in any Georgia county that currently attend a private or public school or are home schooled. They must also emulate Joe Dumphy’s character and approach to life.

According to the scholarship application, ideal candidates “excel academically; participate in activities that support their community; pursues extracurricular interests – with an emphasis on golf - and have demonstrated leadership and solid, faith-based moral character.” Candidates do not have to be on a golf team to apply.
