United Way for Dawson County will announce its 2012 fundraising goal during a breakfast Friday morning.

Afterward, dozens of volunteers will head out in to the community for the organization's annual Day of Caring.

Organizers are expecting a couple dozen volunteers from a variety of businesses and groups to be at the Dawson County Senior Center, NOA and the Adult Learning Center to help with projects.

Chairman Bryan Hendrix, who plans to spend his morning peeling apples at the senior center, said there still is time to register as a volunteer.

"I want to thank all the volunteers that have helped us out the last few years," he said.

Hendrix said they're also grateful to everyone who supported United Way monetarily.

"Especially in this bad economy," he said. "We know everybody is strapped and they are giving what they can."

United Way for Dawson County raised more than $95,000 in 2011.

"It's hard every year for us to reach our goal, but we have a number of fundraisers planned, a 5K and a barbecue to help us make our goal," he said.

Funds collected support local partner agencies such as Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Rape Response, Challenged Child and Friends and WEE Books, among others.

Allocation recipients are considered annually and funds are distributed each spring.

"All the money goes to our county agencies and stays in our county," Hendrix said.
