Family asks for continued prayers

A toddler from Dawsonville has a long recovery ahead of him after a successful kidney tranplant last week.

His mom Randi Hyde said 3-year-old Mason is doing well following Thursday's transplant at Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta.

Sunday night she posted a video to Facebook of "Lil Mason" telling his donor Britni Dougherty, a young, single mother from Hall County that met the family through social media, thank you and that he loved her.

Still a tad groggy from the surgery and medication, Mason was also feeling well enough to talk about finally getting a chance to drink fruit punch for the first time.

Randi Hyde said Dougherty, who visited Mason on Sunday to give him a huge teddy bear, is also doing well.

She called Dougherty's gift to her son "amazing."

Expected to only live a short time after he was born prematurely with a heart condition, Mason has undergone three heart surgeries and many other operations.

Dougherty answered a plea by the family earlier this year for a kidney donor after hearing about Mason's journey from a friend.

"At the time, I was getting a lot of messages from people saying they wanted to donate a kidney to him," Randi Hyde said.

And for many different reasons, the family continued to come up short.

"Then I heard from her a few months later and she said she had all the tests done and she was a match," Randi Hyde said. "She's incredible."

Mason is expected to be in the hospital for up to a month and possibly on several medications afterwards.

"We're not sure yet what these medications are going to cost," she said. "I just want to ask everyone to send prayers for Mason."

A Facebook page, Prayers for Lil' Mason, has been set up for anyone wanting to follow Mason's progress.

Donations can also be sent to 245 Pearl Chambers Rd., Dawsonville, GA 30534.
