A Dawsonville man turned himself in Jan. 24 after police accused him of having sexual intercourse with a minor, according to Dawson County arrest reports.

Matthew Isaac Mayfield, 19, faces a misdemeanor statutory rape charge after he allegedly had intercourse with a teenager less than 16 years of age on April 5, 2018.

Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said that the age of Mayfield and the victim when the incident occurred determined the misdemeanor charge.

According to state statute, “if the victim is at least 14 but less than 16 years of age and the person convicted of statutory rape is 18 years of age or younger and is no more than four years older than the victim, such person shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.”

Johnson said that information developed during a previous arrest of Mayfield led investigators to inquire further.

Mayfield was previously arrested on Jan. 1 and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and distribution of marijuana.

Johnson said Mayfield was released Jan. 27 after posting a $20,000 bond.
