Dawson County recognized with budget presentation award

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has recognized Dawson County with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

The award represents a significant achievement by Dawson County. According to a press release, it reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

In order to receive the budget award, the entity has to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communication device.

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

“We are pleased to receive this award for the third consecutive year,” said Dawson County CFO Vickie Neikirk. “It is a wonderful acknowledgement of a successful budget presentation to the citizens of Dawson County. I appreciate my staff’s hard work in putting this together, and I hope that citizens will find this to be a useful and helpful tool in understanding where their tax dollars are spent.”

“Harry Truman once said, ‘It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets credit,’” said County Manager David Headley. “This award recognizes the excellence our financial staff pursues and their commitment to the taxpayers of Dawson County.”

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition of Budget Presentation also is presented to the people or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. This has been presented to Dawson County’s finance department.

There are more than 1,600 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments across North America.
