A local chapter of Vietnam Veterans is asking for help honoring and remembering those that served in the military this year.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 970 in Dawsonville is reaching out to the Dawson County community to participate in National Wreaths Across America Day.

National Wreaths Across America Day, according to a press release from the chapter, is a day where millions of Americans come together to remember and honor those that have served and to teach the next generation about the value of freedom.

During the annual event, volunteers gather across the nation to place wreaths on headstones for military service men and women. The theme for 2020 is “Be an American Worth Fighting For.”

In 2019, approximately 2.2 million veteran wreaths were placed on headstones at 2,158 locations across the United States, including seven wreaths placed at Veterans Memorial Park in Dawsonville.

The Vietnam Veterans Chapter 970 places wreaths in Dawsonville as well as the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton and the veterans’ section of the Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, among others.
