The Dawson County News has been nominated by the Dawson County Board of Education to be considered for the Beacon Award presented by the Georgia School Boards Association for journalism excellence.

“This board has enthusiastically recommended that we nominate Dawson News for the work that they do in informing our citizens about the work that we do,” said Superintendent Damon Gibbs during the board’s Sept. 4 work session.

The Beacon Award recognizes print and electronic media representatives or organizations whose coverage over time has created understanding of public education issues by informing the general public about programs, policies and issues affecting public schools, students and the community according to the GSBA website.

Up to five awards will be presented in the categories of print and electronic.

“Our local newspaper has helped transform the way we communicate with our parents and Dawson County community. A designated reporter attends all Board of Education meetings, and checks in regularly with our Superintendent so that the most credible information is delivered to our community,” the nomination reads. “In addition, through the creation of the 1Dawson Magazine, Dawson County News has given us the opportunity to ‘tell our story’ through a visually appealing publication.”

Dawson County News was noted for its efforts to keep the community informed about school operations, events, activities, improvement plans and student achievement information.

Articles written by DCN staff covering topics of school safety, the 1:1 iPad initiative, graduation rates, suicide prevention and the Exceptional Children program as well as the inaugural 1Dawson magazine that was released in the summer 2018 were included with the nomination.

The nomination was approved unanimously by the board Sept. 10.

“With our community constantly looking to the news and school system for information, it is imperative that a strong partnership with our local paper be embraced,” the nomination continues. “Their support to offer our public reliable information is exceptional and second to none. Our board of education recognizes the true value that our Dawson County News has on our community.”

The Beacon Awards will be presented to the recipients at the GSBA/GSAA Conference in December.
